The Canadian Employment Market

Updated: July 4th, 2024

Canada’s job market is unique, attracting people from around the world to come live and work in Canada. Canada’s economy is rapidly growing and expanding while many professionals are aging out, so there is a growing need for more employees to join the workforce.

In 2023, there were about 700,000 vacant positions in a variety of industries, including healthcare, STEM, construction, transportation, mining, agriculture and agri-food, and retail.

With a growing demand for a fresh workforce, the Canadian government is encouraging skilled foreigners to immigrate on work visas. Qualified people can receive their work visa through the Express Entry program, Working Holiday, or other. French speakers can earn extra points through Express Entry.

There are also region-specific immigration programs, where provinces and territories seek to attract more temporary and permanent workers to settle down under their jurisdiction.

With abundant employment opportunities, many candidates have the opportunity to live in Canada if they meet the necessary requirements. It’s important to note that the Canadian government selects candidates with in-demand occupations only. Aspiring workers can look up their positions on the Canadian government’s official website.
