Child or Other Dependent Sponsorship Visa
Under the Canadian government’s family sponsorship plan for reuniting family members, Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are parents can sponsor their children or other dependents for long-term residence in Canada. Eligible candidates are unmarried children under the age of 22, whether they are biological descendants or adopted by the sponsoring parent.
The Requirements
As with any other sponsorship visa, the sponsor must meet the specific requirements of the pathway:
- Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Not be in prison, charged with a serious criminal offense that might result in jail time, or bankrupt.
Parents who wish to sponsor their children’s immigration journey must provide the Canadian government with proof of their relationship with the child. This can be done by submitting either a birth certificate or an adoption certificate. It’s important to note that parents who are in the final stages of the adoption process may sponsor the child before the adoption process is completed.
Whether the child is a biological or adopted child, they must have a proven relationship with either the sponsor or the sponsor’s spouse.
Parents who want to sponsor a child must be able to prove that they meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI). If the child has children of their own, the sponsor must meet the minimum requirement for the family unit.
