Canada has become one of the most popular destinations for international students. Its top-tier educational institutions and diverse cultural environment offer an ideal setting for students to pursue their academic and career goals. One major attraction for students is the possibility of transitioning from a temporary study visa to Canadian permanent residency. However, becoming a permanent resident in Canada requires strategic planning and awareness of the opportunities available.

In this blog, we’ll explore five crucial steps international students can take to improve their chances of obtaining Canada PR, along with expert insights into how to maximize these opportunities.

Five crucial steps international students can take to improve their chances of obtaining Canadian permanent residency

Why Study in Canada?

Canada is home to some of the best universities and colleges in the world, attracting students from various countries. Beyond receiving a world-class education, students who study in Canada benefit from a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) program that allows them to work in Canada for up to three years after completing their studies. This work experience is valuable for those seeking to become a Canadian permanent resident.

Choose Programs Aligned with Canada’s In-Demand Occupations

One of the most effective ways for international students to improve their chances of obtaining Canada PR is by choosing study programs that align with Canada’s labor market needs. Canadian provinces and territories regularly update lists of in-demand occupations as part of their Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).

For example, healthcare, technology, engineering, and skilled trades are frequently sought-after sectors. By pursuing studies in these fields, international students can position themselves as valuable candidates for permanent residency.

How This Helps

The benefit of studying in an in-demand field is two-fold:

  • High employment chances: Upon completing your studies, you are more likely to secure a job in Canada, which is a key criterion for many immigration pathways.

  • PNP eligibility: Some provinces prioritize candidates with relevant qualifications for in-demand jobs, improving your odds of receiving a nomination.

Gain Canadian Work Experience

Canada values work experience gained within its borders. After completing your studies, securing Canadian work experience through a Post-Graduation Work Permit is critical to boosting your chances of securing Canadian permanent residency.

Programs like the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry specifically target individuals with Canadian work experience. The more experience you gain in skilled positions, the higher your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which is a crucial factor for Express Entry candidates.

Work While You Study

International students in Canada can work up to 20 hours per week during their studies and full-time during scheduled breaks. This work experience can provide financial support and potentially contribute to your CRS score, even before graduation.

Focus on Language Proficiency

English and French are the official languages of Canada, and proficiency in one or both can significantly enhance your chances of receiving Canada PR. Whether you study in English or French, the government assesses language skills using standardized tests like the IELTS for English or TEF Canada for French.

Improving Language Skills

To maximize your language test results:

  • Take language courses while you study to improve your fluency.
  • Utilize language labs and peer groups to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
  • Focus on achieving scores higher than the minimum required, as better language scores can boost your CRS ranking in Express Entry.

Try a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Canada’s provinces and territories run their immigration programs tailored to meet local economic needs. As an international student, you may be eligible for specific PNP streams that fast-track requests for Canadian permanent residency.

PNP Advantages for Students

  • International graduate streams: Many provinces, including Ontario, British Columbia, and Manitoba, have special categories for international graduates. These programs prioritize candidates who have studied in the province and gained local work experience.

  • Lower CRS cut-off: Through PNPs, students can receive a nomination that grants them an additional 600 points in their Express Entry profile, significantly increasing their chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.

Stay Informed About Changes to Immigration Policies

Canada’s immigration policies evolve to reflect economic needs and demographic shifts. International students need to stay informed about changes that may affect their pathways to Canada PR.

Regularly Check for Updates

Immigration programs like Express Entry, PNPs, and other streams are updated periodically. By staying on top of these changes, you can make timely decisions to enhance your profile:

  • Monitor changes in immigration points systems.
  • Keep an eye on new pilot programs that may offer pathways to permanent residency for specific sectors.
  • Follow announcements regarding extended work permits or additional immigration streams for international students.

FAQ

What is the pool?
To be included in the pool you must qualify for one of the specific immigration programs listed under Express Entry. You must also score a minimum of 67 points on your immigration profile. Points are awarded for educational and professional qualifications, work experience, age, language ability, and more. The Canadian government selects the most suitable candidates from the pool and issues them with an official invitation (known as ITA) to become Canadian residents.
How many points do I need to get selected?
The Express Entry system uses what it called the Comprehensive Ranking System, a formula that takes into account your education, skills and experience, those of your husband/wife or partner, and whether you have a specific job offer. These factors go to build up your score out of a possible maximum of 1200. As mentioned, the higher the points you score, the greater the possibility to be selected from the pool.
How long does it take to move to Canada?
The idea of starting a new life in Canada is very exciting. But please be prepared that getting selected for an immigration program takes time. This is why the Express Entry program is extremely popular - the Canadian government aims to select candidates within 6 months. Time may significantly vary between immigration programs; the individual process of each program, government policies, the complexity of your case, and more, may affect the time it would take you to move to Canada.
Are there any goverment fees?
Like many other countries worldwide the Canadian government charges fees for the processing of immigration entries. Depending on the specific program you entered, the size and age of your family, and more – you may need a few hundred to several thousand Canadian dollars. Please note that all government fees are non-refundable. This is one of many reasons you should prepare well for your immigration process, gain as much knowledge as you can, and if possible, seek help from professionals in this field.
